All about Whitby, ON
Whitby, Ontario, is located on Lake Ontario, only 56 kilometers east of Toronto. The area was first settled in the early 1800s, but the downtown business center wasn’t established until 1836 by Peter Perry, a businessman, political figure, and early settler. It was first known as Perry’s Corner after Peter Perry but was renamed Whitby in 1848 after a seaside town in Yorkshire, England.
Due to its natural harbour, Whitby quickly became a hub for trade across the area. The port was bustling, as well as the Whitby-Port Perry Railway and many road connections. But by 1871, Whitby had been eclipsed by Oshawa and Toronto as the region’s transportation centre. Whitby was finally incorporated in 1855.
During World War II, Whitby was the location for a secret spy training facility called Camp X, established by Sir William Stephenson. A monument of this camp was erected in 1974.
